Sunday 20th March; so myself and my wife leave home bright and early to attend the DCAS Clout Championship being hosted by Newquay bowmen at Tretherras School, Trevenson Rd., Newquay.

After a nice sunny hour drive, we arrived at the venue and set up camp and after registration, I got my tuition form one of the judges on the day as I had never shot a clout before… so this would be something new.

The distance for the men's compound bow category was 185metres, 6 arrows each end and 6 dozen arrows in all to be shot during the day.

I started off slowly, using the house roofs in the distance at first as a sight mark and then the next end I used the houses roofs plus 3 clouds up for the rest of the day.

After 3 dozen I had only scored 80, which I thought was awful, but never the less I carried on.

The wind and I also gained my first ever Tassle award; it was the lowest one but maybe the first of many. I kept shifting but I was feeling ok; and in one end I hit 4 x clout or 4 x 5 points, which pleased me no end.

At the end of the day all the archers assembled for the prize giving and much to my surprise I had won my category, so to say I was surprised was an understatement, this made me County Champion as well.
